I used footage from Maggie and Liz’s shoot this past weekend to begin my experiments with cinemagraphs. Figured, they can use them for their website and I can get kickstarted on something I’ve been fascinated with for a while. Though living in to the Bay Area has greatly reduced my filmmaking opportunities, it has created space for me to explore artistically again (which was very difficult to do before when I was working 12 -16 hours almost everyday of the year ). Cinematography is my passion and one I don’t wish to give up …ever. So it is up to me to generate opportunities for myself to create in ways that I love rather than waiting for someone (or some crew or studio) t0 come along and scoop me up. It is important for me to find mediums and avenues where I can continually hone my practice (because I have this unfathomable love for cameras).
I’m very interested in stop motion and would love to DP that kind of project and though I have some things in the works, it takes a great amount of time to produce results. Discovering cinemagraphs has lead me to place where I can still explore and experiment with more immediate results. I love the moods that these types of images evoke – melancholy, serenity, contemplation, solace, and at times a dry wit. I harbor a fond appreciation for these aspects of the human psyche and look forward to the challenge of trying capture these types of emotions in such a way… maybe attempt to translate a poem. Guess I’m back to attempting to tell a story in one frame. This isn’t easy thing to accomplish …so much the better.

I love the moving serenity of these shots, would look glorious in B/W
that’s next on my list of experimentation. I have a series of images I would like to shoot. some for color some for b/w and some for other treatments (ie – cross-processing), etc. but since these images are basically fro my friends’ film I left them as they like. thanks for noticing.
